Mummers raise charity cash

A GROUP of mummers from Harthill have proved that community spirit is alive and well.

The Harthill Tuppers toured 31 pubs, clubs and restaurants with their own version of ancient mummers play The Derby Tup and raised £2,300 for Rotherham Hospice.

Organiser Norman Anderson said: “It’s a fantastic amount of money to collect in just four nights, considering we are in the middle of a recession, but the public were prepared to dig deep into their pockets for such a worthy cause. The Derby Tup has been performed at Christmas and New Year by men from Harthill for more than 35 years and we do it to keep alive a lovely old tradition while raising money for worthy charities.”
