NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS: Boston, Coningsby, and Gosberton

Members of 17 (Coningsby) Squadron Air Training Corps have been awarded the Lord Lieutenant’s Poppy Appeal Trophy for Uniformed Cadet Units.

The trophy was presented to them by Wing Commander Simon Erskine Crum. It is awarded in recognition for work carried out in support of the Poppy Appeal.  

17 Squadron’s Officer in Charge Flt Off Andrea Nash said: “I am so pleased for our cadets their hard work, year in year out when it comes to collecting for the Royal British Legion is been recognised in such a way.

BOSTON

* Flower Lovers’ Club

At its latest meeting, Boston and District Flower Lovers’ Club Pauline Harrison and Sally Dickens were presented with badges and certificates for 50 years continuous membership.

Chairman Jill Kenning made the presentations.

The club, which celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2018, meets at the Haven High Tollfield Campus, in Tollfield Road, on the first Wednesday of each month, except January, February, March, and August.

Each month, members enjoy watching demonstrations by area and national demonstrators.

The next meeting is on Wednesday, December 4, at 7.30pm, when national demonstrator Nick Grounds will be the guest.

Wine and mince pies will be served.

Burton Corner Women’s Institute recently held in November meeting.

President Elizabeth Marriott opened the session, welcoming all, including one visitor.

The speaker for the evening was Lois Campbell, a qualified medicinal herbalist from Fenland Natural Health, who gave a talk about the ‘medicinal herb garden’.

Members were given insight into the history of medicinal herbs, the constituents that make them beneficial, the ways in which they can be used, and the pros and cons of herbal use.

There were also many samples for members to see, smell, and taste.

A vote of thanks was made by Jean Atterby.

Tea and coffee were then served, and Elizabeth presented the business matters and forthcoming events, including the Christmas lunch, the two craft days, and her thanks for donations made to the women’s refuge.

Competition winners for the month were Maggie Faulkner (item of the month) and Janet Panther (bloom of the month).

Elizabeth then talked about the future of the group, which will be discussed further at the meeting in January.

The raffle was then drawn and Elizabeth closed the meeting.

The next meeting will be the Christmas lunch; it will be held at the Town & County Club, in Boston, on Monday, December 16.

GOSBERTON

* Remembrance

The Royal British Legion’s services of Remembrance in Gosberton and Gosberton Risegate and Clough were well attended last Sunday.

In Gosberton, a service was held at the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev Francis Ballantyne.

The address was given by the Rev Ian Walters, with prayers of intercession by Archbishop Douglas Lewins.

Bible readings were given by the president of the Gosberton branch of the Royal British Legion, Major Ron Meredith, and Barry Richardson.

The organist was Jean Mews.

It was followed by a service at the Gosberton memorial attended by more than a hundred people.

The event saw Gosberton Guides take the standard and wreaths laid on behalf of the Royal British Legion, the parish council, the Gosberton Guides, Gosberton Academy, Gosberton Community Action Team, the family of the late Harold Palmer and the family of the late Reg East.

Afterwards refreshments were served in the Gosberton Public Hall.

During the afternoon, a service was held at the Gosberton Risegate war memorial with Mr Walters and the Rev Steve Weatherly-Barton officiating.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Royal British Legion by Major Meredith and on behalf of the council by Henry Bingham.

Mr Walters officiated at a service at the Gosberton war memorial on Monday, November 11, with Debbie Reynolds reciting the roll of honour.

* Prize bingo

Prize bingo will be held in the Public Hall on Friday, November 22.

Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Refreshments will be available.

Attendees are asked to bring their own drinks and glasses.

* Christmas fair

Gosberton Christmas fair will take place in the church hall on Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24, from 10am to 4pm on both days.

It will feature craft, bric-a-brac, cakes and jam stalls, tombola, and more.

Refreshments will include homemade soup with crusty bread, Christmas cake, mince pies, coffee cake, cheese scones, fresh cream scones, tea, coffee and non alcoholic mulled wine.

* Tea and hymns

Sunday afternoon tea with hymn singing will take place at Gosberton Methodist Church on Sunday, November 24, at 4pm.

* 49 Club

Mike Tarran is now helping with the 49 Club in connection with St Peter and St Paul’s Church.

Janet Young has been doing the lottery for the past 20 years and she is thanked for her work.

There are currently five spare numbers available.

It costs £1 a week to take part in the lottery.

The winning number, which equals the Bonus Ball drawn on Saturday night’s Lotto result – brings a cash prize of £30.

* Women’s Institute

Gosberton Women’s Institute has held its latest meeting.

President Rosemary Sneath welcomed members to the Public Hall for the session, and ensured that each of them had a copy of the WI newsletter.

Items of interest from the county newsletter were read, along with correspondence concerning the national annual meeting next year at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The speaker for the evening was Angela Smith who runs a rescue centre for hedgehogs.

She told members she cares for about 100 hedgehogs in different states of health, ensuring they are in a good condition before being released back into the wild.

She brought one of the hedgehogs with her, a youngster, fully recovered, but not yet big enough to be able to withstand hibernation.

Angela was thanked by Rosemary for her talk, and continued to answer members questions throughout the refreshment break.

The competition (a hedgehog in any medium) and was won by Eileen Johnson for her knitted toy.

The multi-coloured stall was well attended and the raffle was won by Sue Pengelly, who also helped Delcy Moore with refreshments.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 10, when members will be able to make a cracker.

The bring and buy stall will be a ‘sparkly’ stall.

Members are invited to bring seasonal refreshments with them.
