New chapter for villiage library

The facility reopened on Wednesday and one of the organisers Peter Lorimer said ‘it went really well’.

He said: “We wanted to have a fairly quiet opening because we wanted staff to get bedded in and started up slowly.

“Everyone who came in through the door was really happy.

“They said they had missed the library being open.”

Organisers are hoping to have an official opening in the summer when they will also announce future plans for the facility.

Donington’s High Street library was one of 30 closed as part of Lincolnshire County Council cost-cutting measures.

But it has been given a new lease of life – offering all the same services as before – thanks to volunteers.

The library’s doors shut in September, almost six months ago, and the huge team of people responsible for this new chapter have said they are thrilled to see the fruits of all of their hard work.

The facility will be open initially from 10am-1pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays and 2pm-6pm on Fridays.

There are plans to extend those hours, and to invite in more community groups and to revamp the remainder of the building so it can be  brought into community use.

The project has been supported by Donington Parish Council and its clerk Diane Fairweather and district councillor Jane King, who said she was ‘thrilled’ it was reopening.
