New cinema ‘on track’ - VIDEO

HERE is a sneak peak inside what will be Worksop’s brand-new cinema - scheduled for release in March 2012.

The Guardian had a tour of the new Savoy Cinema on the Potter Street site on Tuesday together with students from North Notts College.

Savoy managing director James Collington explained the various aspects of building - from projection rooms to screen technology.

“There’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes and you lose some sense of the excitement until you get back on site and see it taking shape,” he said.

“The screens will boast excellent technology and the facility here will be as good as any other cinema in Sheffield or Doncaster.”

There will be 901 seats, with two main 228-seat screens at the centre of the building, surrounded by four smaller screen - three of which will feature 3D technology.

The iconic building will also feature an eye-catching glass front facing onto Bridge Street and Potter Street.

Lewis Smith, 16, who is studying Business Studies at North Notts College, was one of 25 students who won free tickets for a film of their choice.

“It’s really exciting. It’s much bigger inside than it looks from the outside,” he said.

“I go to the cinema once a month and am really looking forward to it opening. I think it’s what Worksop needs.”

Bassetlaw Council leader Graham Oxby said Worksop was enjoying a new lease of life with market improvements and the new civic space.

“We are immensely proud of what’s going on here - this is the first phase in a massive regeneration for the town.”
