At the start of the Civil War, Gainsborough was a small market town but important due to its small inland port where industry flourished and also a good crossing point with the River Trent.

The battle itself was between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians, which ended in victory for the Parliamentarians and Oliver Cromwell, while the Royalists commander, 23 year-old Sir Charles Cavendish (pictured) was killed.

The Heritage Centre is open every Tuesday 10am until 4pm, Saturday 10am until 4pm and Sunday 11am until 4pm.

The exhibition runs until September 1.
