New-look Alford Library offers homely atmopshere

Alford Library - which re-opened as a volunteer-run operation earlier this year - has been transformed following a refurbishment.

Now known as Alford Focal Point, the facility was one of the libraries earmarked for closure by Lincolnshire County Council until a group of volunteers took it on.

A spokesman for Alford Focal Point said: “In the interim the interior has be decorated and refurbished and it looks to extend the services it provides and be more than just a library. People are getting back into the ‘library habit’ and visitor numbers are close to those prior to the temporary closure with new members joining.

“At present there is a pool of just over 20 volunteers who keep the library open for 11 hours a week but the steering committee is trying to recruit more so that the opening times can be extended.”

Volunteers have received positive feedback from the community about the new-look facility - which includes a ‘home area’ with armchairs, a fireplavce and dining table, and a children’s area offers a comfortable sofa, toys and games.

The spokesman added: “Engagement with the community is vital and the steering committee are keen that local groups utilise the main area and the space upstairs at times when the library is closed. Recently, a ‘ladies night’ attracted 25 attendees who gave feedback on what they would like to see at Alford Focal Point. Suggestions included hot desking facilities, adult story-telling sessions and Lego events for children.”

The book stock continues to be maintained by Lincolnshire County Council and is rotated as previously. Users can still request books, CDs and DVDs from the county stock.

The library is open Tuesdays 10am-2pm, Fridays 2-6pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm.
