New look uniforms for school crossing patrol

School crossing patrols are being given a new look to make them more visible to drivers as they help children cross the road safely.

Some 290 school crossing patrols will be wearing the bright uniforms for the start of the new school term.

All wardens in Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Sheffield will be dressed the same, giving them greater protection and making them more easily identifiable.

Coun Gerald Smith, cabinet member for regeneration and development at Rotherham Council, said: “School crossing patrols play a vital role in helping children and other members of the community to cross the roads safely.”

“By having a clearly visible, standardised uniform across the whole of the South Yorkshire it means that a driver from anywhere in the county will be able to easily identify a school crossing patrol.”

“With these new uniforms, drivers have no excuse for not seeing the wardens. The law states drivers must stop for school crossing patrols and failure to do so could result in a fine of up to £1,000 and three penalty points.”
