The bureau, which is based in brand-new offices at Queen’s Buildings, has experienced an increase in enquiries over Government changes to welfare reforms which are expected to rise further this year.

Citizen’s Advice officers also have growing concerns for the increasing number of people turning to payday loans which have to be paid back at extortionate interest rates.

A bureau spokesman said the dedicated team of advisers have helped to bring about positive changes for clients.

“We had one case of a 79-year-old man who has cancer and his 80-year-old partner, who were struggling financially and with care issues,” she said.

“The bureau arranged a home visit, conducted a benefits check and completed applications for both of them.”

“Higher Rate Attendance Allowance was subsequently awarded to the man, together with Carer premiums and the couple rate of severe disability premiums, which gave entitlement to guaranteed Pension Credit. With greater financial security and less anxiety the couple were able to consider getting married.”
