Night out ends in driving ban

Michael Gamblin, 21, had been drinking with pals including Martin Hughes while watching football in a pub.

They continued drinking at a friend’s house and then the home of Gamblin’s mother before deciding to meet some girls in Worksop.

Helen Griffiths, prosecuting, told Chesterfield magistrates that Gamblin lost control of a Ford Fiesta on a right hand bend in Mansfield Road, Belph, at 7pm.

The car slid across the A60 and turned onto its side and Mr Hughes suffered a fractured left elbow when his arm became trapped between the road and the passenger door.

Mrs Griffiths said passers-by stopped and lifted the car back onto its wheels. Mr Hughes was screaming in pain and managed to climb out through a window.

A sample taken from Gamblin five hours after the accident revealed a reading of 81mgs of alcohol in 100mls of blood, the limit being 80mgs.

Mrs Griffiths said he claimed that another person - not Mr Hughes - had been driving the car but he would not name the alleged driver.

Gamblin, of Park Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, admitted charges of drink-driving, driving while disqualified and without insurance, and failing to give information about a driver on January 28.

Presiding magistrate Paul Beard locked him up for a total of 22 weeks and banned him from driving for three years, after hearing he was convicted of drink-driving last May.
