Nominees up for Town Award

Melita Walker is the dedicated co-ordinator for Duke of Edinburgh Award provision across both Kesteven and Sleaford High School and Carre's Grammar School and is nominated for the Community Award.

She has seen this award develop significantly over the past few years across the two schools to the stage where they are now a licensed centre, helping hundreds of young people each year.

This year has seen the biggest number of participants so far across both schools with pupils working towards 95 Bronze, nearly 50 Silvers and 29 Gold awards. She said: “I love seeing the kids achieve and develop. In 2016 we saw the first Gold awards for seven years.”

Most impressive is the number of young people she has supported to take the award. Each young person is encouraged to take part in physical activity, learn new skills, as well as complete voluntary work in the community. Anything from working in charity shops, helping in primary schools, coaching in sports clubs and as dementia friends to elderly residents.

Most Popular

Mel also oversees D of E with the Sleaford Air Cadets, giving hours of her time supporting young people to achieve a sense of purpose, self-esteem and community contribution. Both her daughter and husband help as volunteers. Last month she completed the Diamond Award with other school staff, involving fundraising and a physical challenge.
