North Anston: Former Wales High School teacher will scour the Sahara in aid of Bluebell Wood

Dedicated fundraiser and former Wales High School teacher Iain Winterbottom is set to trek across the Sahara Desert this April in aid of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston.

The ex- geography teacher will embark upon this incredible journey through formidable landscapes in one of the world’s most inhospitable climates completing the toughest footrace on Earth - the Marathon Des Sables.

The Marathon des Sables is an ‘ultra-marathon’ taking place across seven days covering a course of 251 km - 156 miles equivalent to five and a half marathons.

The first three days are 20 mile runs, before setting off across a barren wilderness to complete the toughest stage of the race, a mere 45-50 miles, on day four. The fifth day is a reduced amount before 26 miles on day six and the final 12 to 15 mile slog to finish on day seven.

The money raised will help Bluebell Wood continue to care for children and young people with a shortened life expectancy in South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Notts and parts of North Lincs.

Gail Parkin, fundraiser at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice said, “This is a huge challenge that Iain is taking on and his efforts are commendable.”

“We would like to wish him the best with this gruelling challenge and thank him for his hard work and dedication which will help us to support more local children.”

When asked about why Iain wanted to support Bluebell Wood, he said, “I was always involved with the fundraising efforts for Bluebell Wood, particularly through the staff band and with my sixth form tutor group so have come to know all about their work entirely through the efforts of Wales High School.”

“Working with young people on a daily basis and knowing the work the hospice does, it seems only appropriate to continue my support, even though I am not currently in the country. The work that Bluebell Wood do is invaluable.”
