North Lincolnshire streets to benefit from over £16.5m during 2016-17

Over 100 schemes will gain from the funding, which will be spent on surface treatments, footway improvements, bridges, street lighting, street furniture and signals. Over £14m has been allocated from the Government via the council’s Local Transport Plan, with a further £2.45m from North Lincolnshire Council.

As well as significant potholing repairs, many footpaths will be resealed across the county. Street lighting will be improved in Brigg, Howsham, Kirton Lindsay and Ashby. The traffic signals on Britannia Corner and on Mary Street in Scunthorpe will be upgraded, whilst flood alleviation works will be carried out at Woodlands View, Barnetby and Reapers Rise, Epworth. The bridge on Thorne Road in Sandtoft will also be repaired. Drainage and road improvement works will be undertaken at Church Street in Scawby. These are just a few examples of the plans in place.

The additional funding from North Lincolnshire Council will support this year’s £350,000 programme of carriageway and footway resurfacing that has already started. It will fund improved flooding and drainage schemes, traffic calming measures and school safety zones together with new pedestrian crossings for Kirton, Barton and Bottesford.

Footpaths that are currently or will soon be resurfaced include:

Bodmin Close, Scunthorpe (between Plymouth Road and Mendip Road).

Sidney Road, Scunthorpe (from Meredith Road).

Mendip Road, Scunthorpe (from Chiltern Road).

Quantock Avenue, Scunthorpe (from Mendip Road).

Chatterton Crescent, Scunthorpe (from Old Crosby Street).

Thornholme Drive, Bottesford (from Chesney Drive).

Roads that are currently or will soon be resurfaced include:

Station Road, Scunthorpe (between Oswald Road and Brigg Road). Dates to be confirmed. Temporary traffic signals will be in place.

Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe (between Newland Avenue and Berkeley Circle). 8 August to 16 August. Temporary traffic signals will be in place.

Hibaldstow (from the speed limit sign to Old Paddock Close). 17 August to 25 August. Temporary traffic signals will be in place.

Cliff Gardens, Scunthorpe (between Brant Road and Highfield Avenue). 26 September to 27 September. The road will be closed temporarily. A diversion will be in place.

Highfield Avenue, Scunthorpe (between Cliff Gardens and Doncaster Road). 28 September to 29 September. The road will be closed temporarily. A diversion will be in place.

Moor Lane Bridge, Yaddlethorpe. 3 October to 4 October. Temporary traffic signals will be in place.

Whilst footpaths are being resurfaced, pedestrians will be directed to use the footpath at the opposite side of the road. The dates above are subject to change depending on weather conditions.

Councillor Neil Poole, cabinet member for Environment at North Lincolnshire Council said: “Improving in our footpaths and roads is a key priority for the council. £16.5m is a significant investment that will improve access to our towns and villages, whilst making it easier for people to change between different forms of transport.

“Protecting the environment is very important. We hope this work will encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport more often.

“By investing in our streets now, less minor repairs should be needed in the future. The lifespan of roads and bridges will be increased, whilst enhanced lighting aims to reduce crime in our area.”
