Work started in earnest on Oldrids’ new million-pound development 40 years ago last week at Wyberton Chain Bridge when the first foundation piles were sunk.

It was planned to include a major car showroom, a furnishing complex, and a 60-seater restaurant, occuping an area of 70,000 sq ft.

The business’ New Street premises – at that time a furniture store – was expected to be put on the market.
