Notts: Modern boost for Northern Rail as contactless ticket payments launch

Northern Rail customers in Notts are now able to benefit from the latest in retailing technology, thanks to a network-wide roll out of contactless payment to all its staffed ticket offices.

Available at 156 stations across the region, customers are able to take advantage of contactless for payments under £20, making it another quick, safe and reliable way to purchase a ticket for your journey.

The contactless technology has been provided by Ingenico in partnership with Fujitsu on 235 ticket office machines at Northern managed stations.

Contactless payments on average take only 5 seconds, 33 percent quicker than previous chip and pin transactions, saving busy travellers more time on their journey.

Alex Hynes, managing director for Northern is delighted to offer this technology to customers.

He said: “We appreciate our customers are always on the go and we hope the latest in contactless equipment at our stations will help keep them on the move. Our trains are busier than ever and being able to make the ticket buying process even simpler means customers have less to worry about once they reach the station.”

Northern, a Serco and Abellio joint venture, has invested £1.5m in modernising its ticket office retailing systems, with the contactless upgrade rolled out across its network.
