The strike - from 7am to 11am - includes ambulance staff and nurses.

Six trade unions are taking part in total and are aiming to secure a one per cent pay rise for all NHS workers.

The four-hour strike is likely to cause some disruption but emergency calls will be dealt with as normal.

East Midlands Ambulance Service Trust tweeted: “During #nationalstrike we’ll provide advice over telephone for non life-threatening conditions, directing people to most appropriate NHS service.”

“Help us to attend to the people who really need us as quickly as possible by only calling 999 in a life-threatening emergency #strike.”

“999 is for life-threatening emergencies: cardiac arrest, chest pain, unconscious, severe bleeding. GP, walk-in centre can deal with minor problems.”
