Notts Police arrest 135 for drink driving in December

Throughout December and over the new year police officers stopped motorists who were suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Scores of roadside breath tests were carried out and information from the public was followed up.

A total of 135 people were arrested for being over the limit while at the wheel.

Chief Inspector Andy Charlton said: “A substantial number of motorists out there continue to drink and drive regardless of the consequences – risking their own lives and that of others by doing so.”

“As the figures show many drivers didn’t heed our warnings and are now facing a hefty fine, a lengthy driving ban and even a spell behind bars.”

The legal drink drive limit is 35 mcgs of alcohol in 100 mls of breath.

Motorists can still be over the limit the morning after a night out drinking.

Notts Police’s drink drive campaign ran alongside the national Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) campaign and the Department for Transport’s THINK! campaign, launched to highlight the devastating impact that drink or drug driving can have.

The force recorded 410 alcohol-related collisions in 2011 with drink being a factor in 7.3 per cent of all crashes.

Between January and the end of October 2012 there were 321 alcohol-related collisions which accounts for seven per cent of all crashes.

“Even though the festivities and new year celebrations are over the message remains the same,” said Chf Insp Charlton.

“The only safe number of alcoholic drinks you can consume before driving is zero. If you choose to drink, don’t drive.”
