Notts police chief says stop and search is used fairly and effectively in the county

Nottinghamshire Police are using stop and search powers fairly and effectively, says a police chief.

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping was responding to a new report published by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) which said some forces fail to understand the impact on the community of the powers, especially those from black and ethnic minority backgrounds.

Commissioner Tipping said the force had made significant improvement on 10 recommendations by HMIC before 2013, when they were introduced.

He said:“I have been very pleased with the progress we have made so far in ensuring the mechanisms are in place to continually check and evaluate the use of stop and search powers by police. Stop and search remains a highly controversial issue within our communities and its misuse can be extremely damaging to public confidence, particularly within the minority ethnic communities where we are trying to very hard to establish positive relationships.”
