Notts: Police issue warning over A1 fuel thefts

The lorry was parked in a lay-by, and is another addition to a growing list of victims along the A1.

Thieves have been particularly targeting the lorries of sleeping drivers, with 600 personal computers also stolen from a parked vehicle in Newark.

Notts Police issued a statement warning drivers of the risks, and encouraging them to park in secure, designated overnight stops rather in lay-bys, where they are at greater risk from thieves.

These lorry parks are often protected by CCTV coverage, and benefit from strength in numbers.

Local offenders and those travelling the country are suspected of being involved in the practice.

Chief Inspector Paul Murphy Police, said: “Due to increases in the price of fuel, we have seen more instances of vehicles being targeted by thieves and organised groups.”

“Offenders strike while the vehicle is parked overnight and generally the driver is asleep.”

CI Murphy added: “If people see what they think is suspicious or unusual activity around vehicles parked in lay-bys I’d urge them to get in touch immediately and let us know.”

“Please share this information with your driver colleagues who might not be aware of the risk. Drivers are our eyes and ears and will also have a wealth of intelligence which to share.”

Police are now aiming to combat the problem by increasing the resources dedicated to tackling the thieves.

A number of covert patrols will take part in joint operations with other forces across the country, patrolling the region’s main motorways.

There will also be a more visible police presence in order to deter those involved in the thefts.
