Police will be make their presence far more visible across the county over the coming weeks in a response to the Government’s raising of the national terror alert level.

Prime Minister David Cameron made the announcement last week in the wake of what he said was an increasing level of threat to the UK posed by Islamist extremist groups operating out of countries like Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Mr Cameron said he was concerned at the number of British Muslims who had gone to these countries to fight with extreme Islamic groups.

And as a result, he said the UK needed to stay alert.

Notts police says this means they will now be a much more visible presence across the county with increased patrols and officer numbers at places like railway stations and airports.

National Policing Lead for Counter-Terrorism, Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said: “Public safety is our priority and we have a variety of established operational tactics that are regularly used to ensure that the UK is both well prepared and protected.”

“Over the years we have built capabilities and enhanced our security arrangements against a consistently high level of threat.”

“Much of this is already in place.”

“Our aim is to reduce the risk to the public and we keep our security arrangements under constant review in line with the threat we face.”

“This will lead to enhanced prevention and preparedness.”

“Following this announcement, we will begin to increase our levels of visible patrols and implement other security and protection measures.”

“We will also build on existing community relations to provide reassurance and seek their support and assistance in keeping the UK safe.”

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to police.”
