It comes after a number of reports of handbags being stolen from unlocked vehicles, after shoppers have unloaded their goods.

Opportunist thieves are taking the chance to enter insecure vehicles and steal handbags, while the owners are distracted taking the trolley back to the designated area.

A Notts Police spokesman urged motorists to ensure that their vehicle is locked at all times.

People spend hundreds of pounds in the run up to Christmas at the supermarkets, but by simply taking a second to lock your car can save you hours of inconvenience if you have to cancel bank cards and get locks changed,” said the spokesman.

“Please be aware of what is going on around you, and make sure your car is locked, even if you are only leaving it for a short time – that is all it takes for a thief to strike.”

Anyone with information about those responsible is asked to contact Notts Police on its non emergency number, 101.
