Notts: Unison calls for rethink over budget proposals

Unison is calling on Notts County Council to rethink it budget proposals.

The Notts branch is asking Labour councillors to consider one year of no cuts, using reserves and borrowing.

The union is organising a demonstration against the cuts at County Hall on Wednesday 13th November, before the council’s policy committee will consider the budget proposals.

Martin Sleath, joint branch secretary of Notts County Unison said: “Notts Unison are very concerned and angry about the massive budget cuts that have been announced by Notts County Council.”

“The proposals will decimate many county council services and will inevitably impact on some of the most vulnerable members of the community. There will be a huge impact on front line services, including youth services, adult social care, libraries, and many others.”

“These proposed cuts come on top of four years of cuts and job losses. Whilst we recognise that the authors of these cuts are the Con-dem coalition government, who have slashed central government funding of local government, we are calling on the Labour council to join us in a campaign to resist these cuts.”

“In the first instance we are calling for a one year no cuts budget and mounting a campaign of resistance.”

“Notts Unison have called a mass lobby of the council policy committee at 12.30pm to 1.30pm on Wednesday 13th November and invite all to join us on that lobby.”

Coaches for Unison members to the cuts demo in Nottingham, will leave Chancery Lane in Retford at 11.15am and Potter Street in Worksop at 11.35am.
