Olympic Torch is on its way

People wanting to catch a glimpse of the Olympic Torch as it makes its way through Rotherham on 26th June are being reminded of the areas they can see it.

The torch will first be seen on the street from Sheffield Road, at its junction with Marsh Street at around 8.50am.

Visitors will be able to see the torch as it travels along Westgate and on to Church Street, past Minster Gardens, round into All Saints Square at 8.59am then along College Street.

The torch bearers will then take the torch up Doncaster Gate to the gates of Clifton Park at 9.03am before travelling through the park along the path that goes from the main gates, past the Cenotaph, bandstand and play area.

The runners will then make their way all along Doncaster Road, past the Mushroom Roundabout and through Dalton and Thrybergh until the convoy reaches the junction of Doncaster Road and Chestnut Court at 9.34am. This is the last point where the torch will be visible, before being put back on the vehicles for the journey to Doncaster.

Rotherham schools will be getting involved in the fun by lining the route and taking part in a school sports festival at Clifton Park from 10am to 3pm.

Around 1,000 young people are expected to take part in a variety of events to celebrate all manner of sporting activities.

There will be some road closures and parking restrictions around the town centre on the morning of the 26th June.

From 7.30am to 9.30am High Street, Church Street, Upper Millgate, Market Street and Bridgegate will be closed. Some parking restrictions will also be in place. Details are available from the Rotherham Council website.
