Be aware on roads

With a week to go until the start of term I would like to say I feel for all those out there wishing the 4th September would never come.

But more importantly I’d like to remind motorists to be vigilant on the roads around schools, especially during dropping-off and picking-up periods. Be mindful of children in the roads, drive slowly and avoid parking on yellow lines or in restricted areas.

We were out on Tuesday targeting vehicles carrying metal and scrap. As a result 36 vehicles were led to a checkpoint in Manton Wood and numerous others were stopped on the road side.

Five drivers were reported for summons, one of for having no licence. Two had their vehicles seized, one for lack of insurance and the other for no tax. Nineteen people were fined, most for not wearing seatbelts, and one received points and a fine for the use of a mobile phone while driving.

Eight vehicles were deemed unroadworthy and their owners instructed to repair them. Three drivers carrying scrap received fines for lack of a waste carrying license or waste transfer notice.

Metal theft and handling in Notts is reducing thanks to the tough stance taken by officers, close partnership working and cooperation from scrap metal dealers. Road checks like this not only pick up those flouting metal laws, but also others who put their own lives and those of other road users on the line.

Many of you will be aware of a spate of distraction burglaries in Worksop in which offenders posed as handymen before stealing cash and property from residents. Last week we arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with two such alleged burglaries. He has been charged and is awaiting a court hearing.
