COLUMN: MP on what we learnt from the reshuffle

A reshuffle can be a brutal, baffling thing – but now that Britain has a Government with a majority to deliver on its priorities it is also a key time to set the long-term direction of travel, writes MP for Boston and Skegness Matt Warman

So it was last week, when it was clearer than ever that in Boris Johnson we have a Prime Minister who wants to focus on the NHS, on infrastructure, and on making sure the police has what it needs.

This is only possible because of hard economic decisions taken over the last decade after the financial crash, but that makes it all the more vital that we deliver as quickly as possible on getting value for money.

My own role was changed only slightly to focus primarily on delivering the better broadband, 4G and 5G this country deserves, while also doing so safe from the undue influence of countries such as China.

It’s a key priority from the very top of Government, but I know it’s also a key priority for so many constituents as well – one of the strengths of our constituency system is that ministers never lose their duties to the people who directly elect them, and Boston and Skegness will always remain my top priority.

I’m confident that the Prime Minister’s new team will strike the right balance between delivering his domestic agenda and also making sure that we seize every opportunity to make the very most of Britain’s new place on the world stage outside the EU.

The prize, at home and abroad, is huge.
