Kiveton hip hop dance battle

My memories of dancing as a youngster take me back to the sedate Blackpool ballroom where my mother would lead me around and try to avoid my clumsy feet.

In my teenage years it would be Anston Youth Club’s Thursday Disco with DJ Charlie, the colourful chappy from Worksop spinning the tunes.

Some 35 years later I find myself at the Kiveton Hip Hop Dance Battle to witness some guys who really do know how to dance.

Fortunately I was too late to enter the competition so I took up my place in the packed Kivo Village Hall as the first battle commenced.

Now let me explain what a hip hop battle involves.

Two contestants are drawn out of a hat to do battle on the dance floor with turns taken to impress the judges.

Audience participation is a must with loud cheers greeting every complex move performed.

This competition is the brain child of Anthony Bayou who runs the Discreets Urban Dance Academy in the heart of Kiveton.

He told me: “The hip hop battles are run every few months and provide a fun environment for young people and their families to enjoy a good night out.”

At the end of the night trophies were awarded to the best two in each category with Anthony Percy winning the Breakdance competition with Matthew Schofield the runner up.

The adult awards went to Sam Underwood and Thae Kelly.

This popular Dance Studio above the Jade centre has gone from strength to strength over the last two years.

“All the dancers who performed tonight did very well and as their dance teacher I am very proud of how they have taken to dancing and it has given them something to aim for in life,” he added.
