Flooding - What a world we live in

I, too, can remember the floods of yesteryear and my parents often had to resort to sandbags in times of wet weather – and on more than one occasion.

Yes, the rivers Bain and Waring are a concern, but surely the bigger worry is the state of the town’s drainage system.

That is where the problem of flooding often comes – not the actual rivers.

For example, when the junction of Boston Road and Jubilee Way floods in Horncastle, it is because rain water cannot get away – not because the Waring has burst its banks.

I’m sure that is the case in other vulnerable areas of the town. But, what do we find? Permission given for more and more new homes, adding to the pressure on the drainage system.

Thunkers Drain could well soon be renamed ‘Sunkers’ Drain because of all the run-off water it will have to deal with.

And, of course, they build a lot of the new homes on low-lying land – Centurion Park is just one example.
