Letter - Council Tax: No need for an increase

I have heard that Louth Town Council has voted to reduce their precept for the coming year’s Council Tax. Good for them.

However, Horncastle Town Council voted to increase their precept by one per cent.

Now, one percent isn’t a lot, and for most people it will amount to less than a pound on their tax bill. But, it’s not the money, it’s the principle.

Over the last year, because of Covid restrictions, Horncastle Council expenditure has been less than it usually is. As I see it, there is no real need for an increase. Are they really short of money?

This smacks of raising the tax “because they can.” Can someone justify it?
