LETTER: Spend money to help flood victims

In Mr Bingham's little homily - page 22 - in the Advertiser last week, he states that the Government cannot reduce the amount of money spent on international aid.

I believe this is not actually true. The last Government legislated to spend 0.7 per cent - or £12 billion - of Gross National Income on overseas aid; the present Government could drastically reduce this amount by legislation just as quickly as it increased it.

This would then enable the Government to spend money helping the thousands of its citizens whose houses have been ruined by the recent floods. Some have had their houses repeatedly inundated, others are now unable to get insurance against flood damage. Don’t forget Mr Bingham, these are the hard working people whose taxes are paying for all the overseas aid. Mr Cameron said after the Somerset Levels were flooded “money is no object”

Well, let’s see the same thing happening for the people of Cumbria and Lancashire.
