January 3

○ The Crazy Gang of Flannagan and Allen, Naughton and Gold and Knervo and Knox starred at Sleaford Picturedrome in a comedy about gold prospecting called Frozen Limits.

○ Men and women anxious about the building up of a new world order after the war, were invited to a discussion group at Sleaford Vicarage for a ‘serious and frank pooling of ideas’.

○ There was a New Year’s dance in Sleaford Church Hall with music by the Musical Nibs.

○ With concerns about the potential dropping of incendiary bombs, the Urban District Council agreed to tie white bags of sand to lamp posts for the use of the public in the event of fires.

○ A Christmas party was laid on for evacuee children and parents at the Red Cross first aid post in Eastgate. This included five-month-old baby Jean, who had been born in a shelter.

1967

January 6

○ A budget of £4.5million had been estimated for education in Kesteven for the coming year, but the county’s Education Committee had not accounted for impending pay awards.

○ Wing Commander Bill Wilkinson, commanding officer of RAF Digby, became a Group Captain in the New Year promotion list and at the same time was awarded the OBE in the New Year honours list.

○ The spiralling cost of providing and maintaining gas and electric cookers and fridges in the 1,447 West Kesteven Rural District Council houses led to drastic action. The council would no longer supply or replace cookers or electrical equipment in homes.

○ Girls from Kesteven and Sleaford High School had been saving up for two years for a visit behind the Iron Curtain to Soviet Russia. Another 1,000 pupils from secondary schools in Kesteven were also going on a cruise to the mouth of the Mediterranean.

1992

January 3

○ Sleaford Chamber of Commerce president Deanne Johnson urged people to be more positive after the Christmas late night shopping events were branded a disappointment. She blamed the recession and encouraged people to shop locally.

○ Police were called to an Ancaster farm when anti-blood sport protestors invaded a shoot and tried to wrestle guns from shooters’ hands.

○ NKDC’s prestigious new £3million offices looked set to become the venue for the next regional count of the general election.

○ A Scopwick woman had an amazing escape when a tree fell on her car. She flung herself onto the passenger seat as it fell, trapping her, but was released by firefighters with only cuts.

○ David Earth, Sleaford Wheelers’ young cyclo-cross star, won the English Schools Cycling Association under 13 East Midlands Area Championship.
