A New Year begins in Skegness as sunrise celebrates love and new beginnings

Skegness welcomed the New Year with a picture-perfect sunrise, capturing a moment of love, hope and fresh beginnings on the seafront.

Local photographer John Byford was out early on New Year’s Day and captured a stunning image of Orby couple Simon and Abi, who chose to mark the start of 2026 together by the sea. Wrapped up against the winter chill, the couple welcomed the New Year as the sun rose over Skegness, celebrating both the moment and their love.

The image perfectly reflects the sense of optimism many feel at the start of a new year — a time for reflection, fresh starts and looking ahead to what the months to come may bring.

Whether you welcomed 2026 with family, friends, fireworks or a quiet walk along the beach, the New Year offers a chance to pause and think about hopes, dreams and plans for the future.

How did you celebrate the arrival of 2026? What are your hopes and dreams for the year ahead?
