'A real privilege': RAF Coningsby engineer takes on London Marathon challenge for SSAFA

An RAF Coningsby engineer has successfully completed the London Marathon, crossing the finish line in under five hurs while raising funds for Armed Forces charity SSAFA.

Flight Lieutenant Joshrun Mann took on the iconic 26.2-mile challenge at the London Marathon, marking his first-ever marathon after taking up long-distance running only recently. He finished in a time of 04:54:46.

Flt Lt Mann, who serves on 41 Test and Evaluation Squadron at RAF Coningsby, secured his place in the event through SSAFA after several unsuccessful attempts in the public ballot.

He described being selected to run for the charity as “a real privilege”, highlighting his desire to give back to an organisation that supports serving personnel, veterans and their families.

“I know friends and colleagues who have had help from SSAFA, and I wanted to do something to say thank you and support the work they do,” he said ahead of the race.

Despite limited experience in long-distance running—having previously focused on competitive swimming and only recently completing his first half marathon—Flt Lt Mann set out with a target time of around four and a half hours.

While he ultimately finished just outside that goal, he successfully completed the demanding course, describing the marathon distance as “a long way” and a significant endurance challenge.

His efforts were praised by Station Commander Group Captain Andy Hampshire, who commended his determination and commitment both on and off duty, and wished him success ahead of the event.

The achievement adds another milestone to what was already a challenging personal journey.
