Monday’s announcement by the Government means only essential shops - and takeaways - are allowed to open.

It’s another crushing blow to many small independent businesses already struggling from the impact of Covid-19 last year.

Fortunately, many were allowed to open in the build up to Christmas which, although quieter than usual, allowed the tills to actually start ringing again.

Now, though, there are doubts about when those same shops will be able to trade again.

Many have set up click and collect and home delivery services.

They include the likes of Flange and Prong, Fletcher and Hughes, Robinsons and Precious Moments.

Some restaurants, coffee houses and pubs are offering a takeaway service, including Montebello , Scrummies and the West Ashby Arms.

However, many will have to stay closed for weeks - even with the roll-out of the Covid vaccine.

It promises to be a long wait before hospitality business will be able to throw open their doors again.

That means the frustration - and worries - will continue for many pubs, restaurants and hotels.

Some pub owners have admitted the lockdown will add to financial problems.

One landlord, who asked not to be named, said: “We haven’t been open for months and we’re looking at losses running into thousands.

“I can’t see how it will change in the near future - even with the vaccine.

“They are talking about Easter (opening) at best. Whether or not we’ll still be about then I don’t know.”

It is a difficult time for all non-essential businesses, including hairdressers and beauty salons.

The Wolds Wildlife Park has confirmed it has closed until further notice.

In a statement on the Park’s Facebook page, owners said: “It is with regret that with immediate effect we have chosen to close until further notice as the government have placed us into tier 4.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience and will offer a refund. Alternatively, hang on to your reference number for another day next year when we can re-open and your booking will be honoured.”

Some pet shops are still opening, as are doctors surgeries, pharmacies, vets and dentists.

Food outlets - including supermarkets - are also open but with some restrictions.
