Care home couple celebrate 70th wedding anniversary

A couple living at a care home near Spilsby woke up to a champagne breakfast on their 70th wedding anniversary.

Kenneth and Renee White were married on September 7, 1950, at St. Anne's Church in Nottingham.

They now live at the Old Hall in Halton Holegate, where they received a congratulations card from the Queen.

After enjoying a champagne breakfast, they were whisked away in the the care home manager’s Tesla for a coffee and cake at Gibraltar Point in Skegness.

This provoked many happy memories and they were presented with lots of gifts flowers and cards from staff and family.

On return to the Old Hall, they enjoyed a 1950’s-style buffet lunch with their friends at the care home, followed by entertainment from the era by Rob Stevens, who runs the Manhattan Show Bar in Ingoldmells.

They had their first dance together before joining in with the other residents for an afternoon full of laughter and dancing.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the couple's families were not able to be with them but the home facilitated a video call with their son so they could share their adventures during the morning.

They were thrilled to receive a card form the Queen, which was put on show at the lunch. The celebration cake was made in the form of the Queen’s hat by the home's cook and decorated by a member of the senior team.

Both Mr and Mrs White were overwhelmed by all the celebrations and said they were very grateful for all the effort that had been put into making their day so special. It was all a big surprise and they didn’t expect any of this.”

Mr White commented: "It was all very satisfactory."
