Charity’s reminder to bereaved people in need of tranquil space – part of our Neighbourhood News round-up

A reminder has gone out to anyone who may be grieving at this time – for whatever reason – that the Lincolnshire Road Victims Memorial Garden, at Westgate Woods, Wyberton, is available for quiet reflection and remembrance.

Chairman Anne Bourne said: “It is so peaceful now and there is seating under and outside the oak shelter.

“It is beautiful at the moment with the birds singing, and you can almost hear a pin drop, ideal for relaxing and contemplation.”

Social distancing guidelines should be followed on visits.

BOSTON

Rotary

Although not meeting physically, members of the Rotary Club of Boston are continuing with their meetings during the Covid-19 lockdown via the video communications platform Zoom.

At its latest meeting, concern was raised that many local charities were having increased demands on them while at the same time suffering a shortfall in funding.

The club’s fundraising ability is limited at present with planned events being cancelled as a consequence of the pandemic, particularly a Bollywood evening which it is now hoped will be held later in the year.

However, members voted to support two local charities with donations from reserves and have donated £500 Centrepoint Outreach and to South Lincolnshire Domestic Abuse Service (Boston Women’s Aid) each.

The club is keeping some reserves to help kick-start a planned garden project with Boston’s Pilgrim School.

President Dr David Clifton said: “In these difficult times members felt that we should do what we can to support important local charities. Once life in Boston returns to normal, the club will return to active fundraising which is an important part of what Rotary stands for – ‘Service before Self’.”

GOSBERTON

* Recycling

The team thank all who have saved their papers over the years.

The collection has raised about £500 a year for the church funds and has assisted with the running costs.

A ‘big thank you’ is given to the Taylor family for allowing the use of their stables to store the newspapers and also to the volunteer helpers in the past, together with the present day helpers: Ray Lindley, Mal Field, and Mike Tarran, plus organiser Hilary Burt for all her hard work.

* Poppy Appeal

The Royal British Legion is looking for helpers for the door-to-door Poppy Appeal in October and November.

Help is also required with counting donations afterwards.

* Food bank

Gosberton’s emergency-only food bank has now been extended due to the coronavirus outbreak.

It is now covering Gosberton, Quadring, Gosberton Clough and Risegate, Surfleet, and parts of Donington.

It is currently helping more than 50 families, with the food being delivered. There are also volunteers who do the shopping and pack up parcels and unpack and sort donations of food.

Thanks are expressed to all support the scheme.
