Town councillor Alan Lockwood says the cash is desperately needed for volunteers at the Urban Foundations Outreach Project (UFOP).

They have helped around 20 former Class A addicts kick their habit.

They are also helping other vulnerable people - including the homeless and victims of domestic abuse.

Coun Lockwood says the volunteers are doing a ‘fantastic job’ in helping reduce crime and anti-social behaviour on the town’s streets.

However, he admits that without funding, the volunteers face a ‘difficult future.’

Coun Lockwood said: “I recently met with UFOP and spoke to some of the now ex-addicts.

“They (the volunteers) have done an absolutely fantastic job.

“Some of the former addicts are now working as volunteers and helping other vulnerable people.

“However, UFOP is entirely self funded.

“They need the support of people, councils, organisations and businesses if they are to carry on helping to keep the streets of Horncastle safe.”

Coun Lockwood revealed a business owner had offered premises in the town.

That would enable UFOP to set up a catering programme which would enable vulnerable people to learn to go and go on to gain qualifications.

UFOP previously ran a similar project - with great success - while based at the town’s community centre. .

Coun Lockwood said: “Having met and spoken to them, they are lovely people who really want to put something back into the community.

“Yes, they had chequered backgrounds and it was heartbreaking listening to some of the stories.

“But the positive is they have turned their lives around.

“Simply locking them up is not the answer.

“They are getting the support they need and with financial support they could achieve a lot more.

“Some of them have been ‘clean’ for 250 days.

“Thanks to UFOP, they now have a focus and are have re-engaged with society.“They have a routine and purpose in life.

“Hopefully, they can stay ‘clean’ but it is an on-going challenge.

“We can’t waste all the fantastic work that has gone into this.”

Coun Lockwood said there was still a drug issue in Horncastle with addicts and dealers involved. He said that was fuelling crime and ASB.

He revealed he had contacted a number of organisations about potential funding and support packages but added: “We can all help.”
