Dedicated Dave dives in at the deep end to raise cash

Three years ago - and at the age of 64 - Dave decided he wanted to learn to swim.

He headed off for lessons at Horncastle Swimming Pool - and happily took to his new activity like the proverbial duck to water.

Then, Dave’s progress was halted by a serious neck problem.

He was admitted to hospital and had an operation that included removing two discs from his neck.

The damage also put paid to his career as a painter and decorator.

Undaunted, Dave returned to the pool and quickly made up for lost time.

Before the lockdown was brought in and the pool closed, he completed in ‘Swimathon’ - a national fundraising event.

Dave duly swam 100 lengths of the Horncastle pool - and proudly earned his 2.5km certificate in the process.

More importantly, the 67-year-old raised £328, which will be divided between Marie Curie and Cancer Research.

Both charities are close to Dave’s heart.

He explained: “My dad died from cancer and my mum’s had it.

“I know a lot of people - family and friends - who have had it so it’s fantastic to have raised that money.”

David admitted his initial target was just £50.

He added: “One of my former customers donated £50 straightaway and the money kept coming in. I can’t thank everyone enough.”

Dave was also full of praise for the support he received from staff at the Magna Vitae owned pool.

He added: “They were brilliant and made all the arrangements.

“I couldn’t have done it without them.”
