ELDC confirms Christmas lights will go up in Mablethorpe after complaints

East Lindsey District Council has confirmed that Christmas lights will be put up in Mablethorpe in the next few days, following complaints from local residents that Mablethorpe risked becoming “the only town in the UK without Christmas lights”.

Local businessman Robert Baldwin - often known as ‘Bobby Mablethorpe’ - posted on social media earlier this week: “We want our Christmas lights.

“We do not want Mablethorpe to be the only town in the UK without Christmas lights.

“We have had enough of the systemic persecution from the powers that be to the population of Mablethorpe.”

Mr Baldwin went on to write that not enough was done to support education, businesses, and investment in the town generally, before adding: “And now the icing on the cake. You deprive Mablethorpe of its Christmas lights. Mablethorpe lives matter.”

“We should not sit back and be the only UK town high street with no Christmas lights, pandemic or no pandemic.”

Mr Baldwin’s post attracted dozens of ‘likes’ and several comments in support.

Following enquiries by the Leader, an East Lindsey District Council spokesman confirmed that the council had listened to residents, and would be taking action ‘within the next few days’.

Duncan Hollingworth, Service Manager for Property and Technical Services at the district council, said: “We do usually provide Mablethorpe with summer illuminations, these then remain in the town and become the town’s winter lights.

“Unfortunately this year, for a range of reasons including issues caused by the pandemic, we were unable to provide the summer illuminations, which in turn meant there were no winter illuminations. Following feedback from the local community we are working with a contractor with a view to putting some lights in place within the next few days.”

Meanwhile, Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Council already has provided three large Christmas trees in Mablethorpe, Trusthorpe, and Sutton on Sea.

In addition, the town council has supplied more than 50 smaller trees to participating businesses across the parish, free of charge.
