Darren Bevan, 53, and son Adam, 24, jet off to Tanzania tomorrow (Thursday, March 5) to scale Mount Kilimanjaro.

As well as the personal challenge the climb presents, the effort is being made to raise funds for Lincolnshire Lowland Search and Rescue – a Lincolnshire-based charity which searches for vulnerable missing persons and assists the emergency services in the event of a medical incident, a casualty search, or natural disaster. Darren, who lives in Wyberton and works at JDM Food Group, in Bicker, is a member of the team.

“We have been training as much as possible in the mountains of the UK, though nothing in the UK can prepare us for the altitude challenge presented by Kilimanjaro,” he said.

While Adam grew up locally, these days the ex-Boston Grammar schoolboy is based in Los Angeles, where he works for a food manufacturing business. Darren says, though, he remains a ‘Yellowbelly Pilgrim at heart’, having played for Boston United Football Academy when he was younger and still follows the team from afar.

Darren added: “I am looking forward to the climb which will definitely take me out of my comfort zone and I only hope that neither of us fall foul of altitude sickness which could bring the climb to a premature end!”
