Festival marks the 250th anniversary of Louth Canal

For many taking part in Louth Canal’s 250th anniversary celebration last weekend, it was their first and possibly their last job this year – so a very special two day event!

As reported last week, the two day event was officially opened by the Mayor of Louth, Darren Hobson, on Saturday morning - and the festivities continued until the late afternoon, before starting all over again on the Sunday morning.

Paula Hunt, the secretary of the Louth Navigation Trust (LNT), said: “The Riverhead lends itself nicely to social distancing so people used the bridge and wharf to best advantage to listen to the live music.

“On Sunday, Cleethorpes Model Boat Association set up a wonderful array of boats on the slipway and displayed their motorised sailing skills on the canal together with Joanne in her canoe.

“We are trying to encourage the Environment Agency to hold a bit more water and a bit less weed in the basin to enable more leisure events like this. Joanne had very little room to manoeuvre.

“Stuart Sizer gave two talks in connection with the Heritage Open Day Festival, the second included a walk around the Riverhead Trail and featured the many warehouses in the area which hail from 1770 when the canal opened.

“Fee Griffin has written a poem to celebrate the 250 years anniversary and it is available on the website.”
