Singing has been proved to benefit health '“ and none more so than for those living with dementia.

The Carry on Singing group is living proof of that, with its twice monthly meetings in Middle Rasen Church Hall.

The group is open to anyone living with dementia and was set up by Rosemary Walker in 2013.

“We started with just two people, but it has grown from there,” said Rosemary.

“Originally, I was a volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Society group in Lincoln, but I thought it would be nice to set something up closer to home – and here we are.”

During the afternoon sessions, songs from across the years are sung, with a particular favourite being anything by Abba.

“I like singing, I don’t know what I would do without it, especially when feeling down,” said group member Nick.

But it is not just those with dementia who benefit from the group, carers too get a lot out of it.

“It is not just the singing, it is the social side; we all know each other now and look forward to meeting up,” said Annie, who has been bringing her husband Norman to the group for two years. “Everyone is equal and it happens often enough to make it familiar.

“I can’t say thank you enough to the people who run it; it’s a simple thing but the rewards go far beyond it.”

Carry on Singing meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
