Like most licensed premises, Harpars Bar in South Street has seen trade hit by Covid restrictions, the latest of which saw a 10pm curfew imposed.

That – combined with a reduction in indoor capacity – led to very real fears that the bar might have to shut.

But joint owner Claire Farrell has revealed local traders are working on new covered outdoor seating area that will accommodate 42 customers.

No-one will even have to miss out on the latest sporting action as a giant TV screen will be fitted to one of the outside walls , allowing the popular bar to continue to show Premiership football.

And, what’s more, the tradesmen have given their time free of charge...including Claire’s partner Noel Benson.

Ms Farrell admitted: “Coronavirus has had an impact on trade and it was a struggle even before the 10pm curfew was introduced.

“To be fair, it hasn’t really made a difference during the week but it has really hit takings on a Friday and Saturday.

“We’ve had to reduce the number of people we can accommodate inside at any one time and it was getting to the point of ‘can we carry on?’

“However, we aren’t going to let this (coronavirus) beat us.

“We’re investing in the new area and hopefully that really will make a difference.”

Ms Farrell stressed the new facility – featuring separate wooden booths – will meet all safety and social distancing requirements.

She added: “All throughout this, we’ve been very strict about the rules and
regulations and anyone who has refused to comply has been asked to leave.

“The new booths will be table only service.

“It is a major investment and we are just hoping it pays off.”

Ms Farrell said she could not thank the tradesmen enough for their support.

She added: “They’ve taken unpaid holidays from their jobs and are working free of charge. That’s made a huge difference. It’s fantastic gesture.”

The outdoor area will feature heating and lighting...meaning customers can enjoy the atmosphere, even in the middle of winter.

Ms Farrell stressed how important Covid restrictions are but added she felt licensed premises were being unfairly targeted.

She added: “All the figures suggest just five per cent of cases are down to people visiting pubs and bars.

“Almost 35 per cent are household related yet the latest restrictions seem to be encouraging people to drink in groups at home, or hold street parties.”

Ms Farrell said she believed the authorities should take firmer action against people – and businesses – who fail to comply.

She added: “We’ve gone over and above but somehow it feels like we are still being punished.”
