With no motorways anywhere in our county - the nearest being the M180, and the closest thing we have to a motorway being the A1 - getting anywhere can be tricky as we negotiate our main A-roads, many of which are single carriageways, on our daily commute.
Using data from the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP), we've taken a look at the main roads in Lincolnshire to see which has the highest number of KSI (killed and serious injury) incidents over the last three years (up to and including March 31 2021), as well as taking advice from the LRSP about how we can drive safely on these roads.
• A17 Sleaford to Boston - starting at Holdingham roundabout in Sleaford and ending at Boston, this stretch of the A17 has proved to be the most dangerous, with 10 fatal collisions and 20 serious, totally 30 KSIs. The road is a single carriageway for much of the 19 mile stretch, and is used by tens of thousands of motorists per day, frequented by HGVs and caravans heading to the coast.
• A52 Boston to Skegness - With four fatalities and 18 serious collisions, 22 altogether since 2018, this stretch between the two busy Lincolnshire towns is another notorious road for incidents, the most recent on April 19 this year.
• A16 Spilsby to Louth - The A16 has seen 20 KSIs in the past three years, with two fatalities and 18 serious. One such incident happened in September 2020, which closed the road for several hours between the Spilsby and Partney roundabouts.
• A16 Boston to Spilsby - Continuing on the A16, the stretch between Boston and Spilsby is next in the list, with three fatal collisions and 15 serious incidents along this 17 mile section.
• A158 Lincoln to Horncastle - Also with 18 KSIs, this main road has seen two fatalities and 16 serious incidents along the 23 mile route, which twists and turns along this rural route.
• A158 Horncastle to Skegness - Also with 18 KSIs, and the same amount of 2 fatalities and 16 serious incidents, the remainder of the A158 finishes near the coast at Skegness, 20 miles away from Horncastle town centre.
• A15 Sleaford to Bourne - We looked at the 20 mile southbound stretch of this rural main road, starting at Holdingham roundabout and ending in Bourne, and found it has seen three fatalities and 14 serious collisions.
• A15 Lincoln to Sleaford - The A15's northbound stretch, starting at Holdingham roundabout and finishing 18 miles away in the city of Lincoln, has similar figures of three fatalities in the last three years and 12 serious incidents. One recent one happened on December 14 involved a two-car collision near Cranwell.
• A46 Welton to Caistor - With two fatalities and seven serious incidents, the rurall carriageway has seen relatively low incidents over the past three years.
• A153 Sleaford to Grantham (A607 Junction) - Those using this country road, which passes through Wilsford, Barkston and Manthorpe on its way, has seen only two serious incidents in the past three years, neither of which were fatalities.
John Siddle of the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership said: "With all road safety issues we try to look at the root cause through the investigations and sadly 95 percent of collisions are driver or rider error, this means we can do something about it and driver/rider education is our best tool.
"We have already seen seven people die on our roads in the first four months [of 2021] despite having no one die in the first two months."
John said that this sharp rise could potentially be due to people not having driven anywhere for the first few months of the year due to lockdown, and then returning to the road straight away:
"As restrictions are lifted and we all return to the road we need to look at what our skill set is, I'm sure drivers who have been away on holiday for two weeks in the sun find it strange when they drive home from the airport, imagine having not driven few several weeks or even months and thinking we are ok to carry on.
"Some motorcycle riders have not ridden for nearly a year so it is no surprise to us that 57 percent of our fatal casualties this year are bikers.
"It is every drivers responsibility to ensure they are fit to drive and that includes making sure their skills are not rusty."
The LRSP recommends driving short distances before long ones if you have not driven for a while, sharing the driving with your partner and if you really want to step your game up, look towards advanced driving.
