Letter: Responsible Ramblers

As a walker and member of the Ramblers, I share the frustration of the residents of Binbrook, Belchford, Tealby and other popular starting points for walks in the Lincolnshire countryside (Market Rasen Mail and Louth Leader 1st April 2020).

In your report, you refer to ‘ramblers who flout lockdown rules.’

I am also frustrated that the Ramblers (capital R) is frequently implied when referring to walkers or ramblers (small r).

Semantics? Possibly, but it means that the misdemeanours of the 9+ million walkers in the UK, such as dropping litter, damaging crops, leaving farm gates open etc, are often laid at the door of the 120,000 members of the Ramblers.

I would doubt that the ‘carload’ referred to in your article would be Ramblers members.

As Britain’s largest walking charity, and the only charity dedicated to looking after paths and green spaces, leading walks and encouraging everyone to get outside and discover how walking boosts ones health and happiness, we take what we do seriously.

On the 18th March, following Government advice, we suspended all group walks and activities nationwide, and encouraged members to only walk locally to where they live and access without the use of a car or public transport.

I have every confidence that the 1500 members in Lincolnshire have heeded that advice.

Can I invite all walkers to check the Lincolnshire Ramblers website for the latest advice on the current situation, it’s updated regularly: https://lincolnshireramblers.org.uk
