The big event of the year was the Silver Jubilee celebrations for King George V and Queen Mary.

Market Rasen had a big event, with the extract from the programme pictured showing just some of the many sporting activities.

There were also celebrations in the villages, as these extracts show - maybe some of the names mentioned are from your family.

Everybody in the village co-operated to make the jubilee celebrations a success and not only were helpers readily forthcoming but provisions were contributed so generously by each household that after tea for children and adults, and the supper which followed later, a surplus remained which was auctioned for the benefit of the children’s summer outing fund.

Over 40 children sat down to tea in the hut, and about 50 adults were also entertained to tea.

The children were presented with jubilee mugs, the gift of Mr and Mrs J T Fieldsend and Miss Haywood.

A programme of sports and games was organised by Captain E B Broughton and was much enjoyed, and as darkness fell a large bonfire was lit.

Each child in the village, as well as those living in the outlying hamlets of Towes, Wykeham and Thorpe-le-Vale, received a half-pound box of toffee as a souvenir of the jubilee at a thanksgiving service held at the parish church early on Monday afternoon.

The rector (the Rev G A Wade) officiated, Mr R H Bickerstaff read the lesson, and the boxes of sweets were handed to the children at the close of the service by Mr F Holloway, who was assisted by Mr Walter Houlden.

Sports were held in the afternoon and evening in a field kindly lent by Mr D Martin, the chief officials being: starter, the Rev G A Wade; handicappers, Mr F Holloway and Mr R H Bickerstaff; and judges, Mrs Proctor, Miss Drakes, Mr W Houldon and Mr Carrott.

The village was bright with decorations from one end to the other, and the church bells, ringing at frequent intervals, gave a reminder of the importance of the occasion.

In the afternoon a thanksgiving service was conducted by the vicar (the Rev F M Fitch) and teas followed later for school children and old people, the latter being entertained by the local Women’s Institute.

Sports for children in the evening, held in a field opposite the school which had been lent by Mr B Leaning, were watched with interest by a large company.

The officials were: judges, Messrs H Lee, C Cade, H Tyson, J Fisher, T Butters and G King; starter, Mr S B Vickers; and recorders, Mrs Vickers and Miss Clarke.

Miss Goy presented the prizes at the close.

The children received cups and saucers as jubilee souvenirs and after the sports, each child was also given an orange.

Mr H Tyson also presented each one with a bun iced in colours.

The Women’s Choral Society gave a repeat performance of their delightful little cantata, ‘The gipsies’ holiday’ and there was a whist drive at the close, organised by Miss Limon.
