The scheme was set up in response to concerns about the speed of vehicles coming into the town on all of the major routes, with mayor John Matthews describing the A631 as ‘dangerous’ and
‘horrendous’.

A team of 14 volunteers, including Coun Matthews, has completed Lincolnshire Police radar gun training - and the only thing left to do is register the sites that will be targeted.

Coun Matthews said: “It [the training] was very positive. There were 14 [people] including myself.

“PCSO Neal Evans conducted the training.

“[Coun] Stephen Bunney, [Coun] June Clark and myself are now empowered to conduct training for anyone else who wishes to join the group.

“We went through all the legal bits we have to do to comply.

“We’ve got all the forms and paperwork, radar guns, signage, hi-vis vests.

“We’ve just got to get the sites registered.

“When you move around town you see how fast some of the traffic moves… this is preventative rather than enforcement.

“But people see hi-vis vests and a radar gun and they slow down.”

Coun Matthews said the group could also potentially cover roads in North Willingham and Ludford as the scheme is not restricted to the centre of the town.

In a post on social media on August 12, deputy mayor Stephen Bunney said: “Hopefully within the next fortnight the group will be out and about in the area.

“Thanks to everyone who has volunteered.”

And Coun Bunney said there would be further sessions later on in the year.

Speaking at the town council’s first virtual full council meeting last month, Coun Bunney said residents were particularly concerned about ‘the speed to traffic coming down from Tesco’.
