Since the Standard first reported on Harry Ramsbottoms' launch, the free service has doubled and local Freemasons have now come on board to support it.

Volunteers from the Lumley Lodge Freemasons joined fish and chip shop owner Victor Fox and his staff in delivering meals as far away as Burgh le Marsh, following discussions with Father Terry regarding the number of elderly people isolating in the village.

Deliveries were also made to the police, firefighters and the ambulance service, as well as the homeless, who has now risen to more than 40 taking refuge at Witham Lodge.

Vouchers for takeaway have also been issued by the Salvation Army and the Storehouse.

Mr Fox, who said he launched the initiative as a way of saying thank you to a town that had supported his business over the years, commented he was delighted with the response.

"One lady who has arthritis told us she hadn't had fish and chips for years and really looks forward to them now," he said. "A care home also had a treat when one of the Lumley Lodge volunteers, who usually bought fish and chips one a week for his mum, took all the residents some. They really went down well."

Terry Smalley, Lumley Lodge almoner, said: "The Freemasons are pleased to be able to support Victor and help the fish and chips get to those who most need them.

"There are so many vulnerable people out there on their own who benefit from this. Our volunteers have full PPE and are keeping as safe as possible."

Harry Ramsbottoms, near the Clock Tower in Lumley Road, is open from noon to 4pm on Fridays to redeem the vouchers. The restaurant is not open to the general public and social distancing is in force and clearly marked within the shop and outside.
