National honour for technology teacher

A '˜hardworking and knowledgeable young teacher' at a Sleaford school has won a national award in her chosen field of design and technology.

Rebecca Topps, of St George’s Academy, is to receive a Design and Technology Association Excellence Award for Subject Leadership. It follows a nomination by Lincoln’s Ideasin2action design consultancy.

Miss Topps, 29, is second in charge of the technology faculty at St George’s.

She is credited with helping increase uptake of the technology subjects and improve results, and her commitment to the field extends beyond the school. Last year, she founded the Lincolnshire Young Designer of the Year Award to help showcase local design talent.

Speaking to The Standard, she said she was immensely proud to have won the award, but also shocked, adding: “I feel I’m just doing my job.”

She paid tribute to the school for being a “massive supporter” of design and technology as well as the work done by the rest of the faculty.

Jackie Griffiths, head of art and design, said: “After many years in education, it is refreshing to work alongside such a hardworking and knowledgeable young teacher who aspires to be the best for the benefit of the students.

“She is a role model for our girls. I am so proud of her and the award is well deserved.”
