Gunby Hall announced yesterday (Monday, April 6) via its social media channels that Craig the cat – brother of fellow resident Committee – had died peacefully at the weekend.

He was 17.

In its post, the National Trust property described Craig as a ‘much beloved member of the Gunby team’.

“Clive, who has looked after him so well for all these years, was by his side,” the post continued. “Craig was buried in his favourite spot in the Gunby gardens on a beautiful sunny day. He will be greatly missed by the team and visitors alike.”

Craig had a profile far beyond that of most domestic cats. Together with his sister, he had a large following on social media, been featured in the national press, and also made the pages of a book dedicated to the cats of the National Trust.

News of his death brought an outpouring of sympathy online – including from people who had never met Craig, but knew him through social media updates.

At the time of writing, Gunby Hall’s announcement about Craig had attracted more than 300 comments across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

In a post today, Gunby Hall thanked people for their ‘kind messages’, adding a video of Committee enjoying the warm weather following concern about how she would be handling the loss of her sibling.
