The town’s History and Heritage Society admits progress on work to conserve a section of the nationally important Roman wall has also been set back by the pandemic, but stresses ‘big steps forward have been made’.

Society chairman Dr Ian Marshman revealed Historic England had provided a grant towards the work and helped find a specialist contractor.

He added: “Although we had hoped to start work on site this year, and we came close to starting several times, it did not quite prove possible before the cold weather arrived.

“Pandemic permitting, conservation work should finally be able to begin in the spring.

“Unfortunately, we need to wait until then because the lime mortar used will not set properly when temperatures fall below 5C (41F).”
