‘£600 handed through the car window… and it was all a bit too good to be true!’: Police share bizarre roadside encounter

A Lincolnshire motorist has shared a bizarre roadside encounter after a stranger allegedly handed over £600 through a car window — before it quickly became clear things weren’t quite as they seemed.

At first, the driver admitted he was “pleasantly shocked” by the unexpected windfall… for about a split second.

“Then I started looking for the cameras, the hidden microphone,” he said. “I thought, is this an integrity test? Am I about to end up in Lincoln custody or starring in some hidden TV show?”

But the mystery was soon solved when it turned out the cash had been discovered blowing around on the roadside near Langham Road, Hogsthorpe, after being spotted by a passing driver.

What followed was a rather unusual scene involving a verge, a ditch, and what the driver described as “around £800 worth of the best £20 notes the King could print”.

“Off I went to see if my next holiday was a 3-star or a 5-star hotel,” he joked.

The cash was eventually recovered — though the owner has since taken to social media to try and trace its rightful home.

“If you’ve lost around £800 in recent months and want it back, get in touch,” he said. “You can even comment on here.”

He also added a light-hearted warning for anyone who may have come across stray notes:

“If you picked up some nice crisp £20 notes on Langham Road yesterday… by all means keep them. We don’t want them back. My little gift to you. BUT PLEASE do not be tempted to spend them. Ever.”

Despite the surreal nature of the incident, the driver confirmed no hidden camera show was involved — and joked that any talk of “5-star hotels” was strictly tongue in cheek.
